Marco Fu dropped to 18th in the world snooker rankings after the UK Championship and as the 16th seed wasn’t one of the favourites to win The Masters. Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen looked set to join Ding Junhui in the final having played some exquisite snooker. And at 4-1 up in the semi final against Marco Fu it looked like Allen was on the brink of doing so. However, Marco Fu mounted a spirited fight back, notching up two centuries and a 97 to bring the match level at 4-4. Fu battled to take the 9th frame 63-32 and 10th 74-39 holding back the nerves under the pressure of the Wembley Arena atmosphere.

Ding Junhui’s route to the final was more comfortable and he dominated Jamie Cope throughout the match. At 3-1 up before the mid-session interval having racked up breaks of 68, 54 and 102 Ding had established control over the match. Jamie Cope needed to muster a break of 101 to pinch a frame in the mid-session interval so he would’ve felt he had a mountain to climb in the second session. Ding Junhui managed to steal the 5th frame on the black 65-58 and at 4-1 isn’t wasn’t looking like it was going to be Jamie Cope’s day. Ding Junhui went on to win the match 6-3 with breaks of 69 and 58 to win the final frame 127-4. The Chinese player will be delighted to have progressed to The Masters final, even more so because it’s an all-Asian final.
