It took four hours of tense snooker to decide a winner in Ali Carter and Peter Ebdon’s The Master’s 2011 first round match. Ebdon managed to grind out a 6-5 victory to progress to the final.

Peter Ebdon and Ali Carter’s match was tightly fought with safety shots dictating the style of play. Neither player managed to make a century in the 11 frame match so Peter Ebdon’s score of 88 in the fourth frame was enough to claim the highest break.

Form and the World Snooker rankings suggested that Ali Carter would be a clear favourite but there were large phases of the game where Ebdon and Carter had reached a stale-mate. At 5-4 up and with the score at 64-0, Ebdon looked like he was going to point the game to bed but Carter was able clinch the frame and take the match to a final frame decider. The final frame was scrappy with neither player able to put together a significant break. It took some excellent snooker’s by Peter Ebdon to build a lead, the last of which Ali Carter canoned the cue ball into the middle bag and set up Peter Ebdon for another low-scoring but match winning break.

Peter Ebdon will play the winner of Stephen Maguire and Marco Fu’s 2011 The Masters first round match scheduled to be played on Tuesday at 7:00pm.
